How to clean vintage clothes by material
Vintage cotton, wool, silk, leather, each material needs a different approach. Cleaning guide without unnecessary mistakes.
The biggest mistake that ruins vintage pieces? Washing machine set at 60 degrees and tumble drying. Vintage clothing is generally more sensitive than today's synthetics, but also more durable if treated properly. The difference is mainly the material.
Cotton Vintage cotton is denser and stronger than today's cotton. Can withstand washing in a washing machine at 30-40 degrees, gentle program. Turn the dark pieces inside out so that the print or color does not fade. No tumble drying, cotton will shrink. Dry loosely hung.
Wave Wave and water are friends only under pre-agreed conditions. Hand wash in lukewarm water with a mild detergent (or shampoo). Never squeeze, squeeze, do not twist. Dry flat on a towel to keep the piece in shape. Washing machine only if it has a “wool” or “hand wash” program with low temperature and no spin.
Silk Silk is the most sensitive. Hand wash in cold water, minimal detergent, immediate and gentle rinsing. Dry in the shade, never in direct sunlight, silk will fade. Iron over a damp cloth at a low temperature.
Leather Leather is not washable. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth, saddle soap for stains. Conditioner 1-2 times a year. Detailed guide in the article [Care of a leather jacket → /cs/blog/care-of-a-leather jacket].
Vintage era synthetics (nylon, polyester) Vintage nylon and polyester are stronger than today's versions. Washing machine at 30 degrees, gentle program. Dry loosely, polyester in the drum may warp or collect static electricity.
